Baule cloth takes its name from the Baule people who migrated to Ivory Coast from Ghana several centuries ago. They learned the craft of textile weaving from the neighboring Dioula people. Using standing looms, they weave narrow strips of cotton cloth and then stitch them together to create larger swaths of material. These textiles, commonly seen in blue and white with pops of bright stitching, were worn wrapped around the body by the Baule men and women during important ceremonies and events.
