Artisan & Story:
The rich tradition of basket weaving is seen throughout Africa with each country producing a unique style. These fair trade baskets are beautifully handwoven by indigenous women of the Frafra people near the town of Bolgatanga in northern Ghana. Weaving skills are passed down from mother to daughter in communal groups where women gather to socialize and weave. This design is influenced by basket styles originally used for storing water and grain. Medium-sized baskets take about 2 days to make depending on the shape and pattern.
