Women weavers in Anatolian villages hand-weave organic wool on traditional looms to create these modern kilims. Each one takes several months to make, and irregularities in the yarn and dyes result in a perfectly imperfect rug.
Kilims were traditionally used as floor and wall coverings of the tents of nomadic people who moved with their herds based on seasons and grazing conditions. These rugs are a trademark of nomadic cultures and literally defined their homes. Wool from sheep and goats of their herds was readily available and plants and insects were used as natural dyes. Kilims were handwoven by women using motifs that tell a personal story of the weaver behind the rug.
