These pillows are the stylish creations of the brother-sister design team at 3rd Culture in Istanbul. Working under the conceptual guidelines “inspired by the world, created in Istanbul”, the duo represents the burgeoning modern creative scene in Turkey. They apply a global perspective honed through years of traveling and living abroad, resulting in chic pieces that are easily at home in Senegal or San Francisco.
African wax print fabrics originated in Indonesia as batiks - textiles created by drawing patterns on fabric with hot wax, applying layers of dye, and removing the wax to reveal a beautiful design. Dutch traders who colonized Indonesia brought batik to Europe where the style was replicated. While stopping in West Africa en route to the Far East, the Dutch found a new market for their colorful/vibrant prints. Over time, patterns were influenced by African tribal motifs and hues, and they continue to evolve today taking inspiration from modern society.
