Artisan + Story:
The pillows and throws in our collection are all made from organic indigenous cotton and natural indigo from locally grown “Kham” plants. Artisans are responsible for the entire process from growing and spinning the cotton, to fermenting and applying the dyes, to building their spinning wheels and bamboo looms, and finally, weaving the beautiful textiles.
This is a time and labor intensive process which results in beautiful colors and textures. Growing the cotton takes 8 months and is timed with the monsoon season and other crops the artisans grow for their own consumption. Dying takes months to prepare the vats and allow them to ferment before soaking the cotton repeatedly until the desired hue is achieved.
Families from 4 weaving communities in Laos create these stunning indigo textiles. They are part of a non-profit cooperative called Saoban, which means “village” in Laos. As an active member of Fair Trade Lao, Saoban ensures fair pay and working environment for rural families and communities, while providing training in handicraft skills, sustainability and micro-finance. They are committed to producing an eco-friendly product that supports rural communities while preserving the local cultural heritage.
